Umami.  The “extra” taste frontier.  Have you heard about it?  Experienced it?

Often referred to as the “fifth taste” after sweet, sour, bitter, and salty, umami was officially recognized as basic taste in 1985. 

What does it taste like?

Here’s a great definition:  “it can be described as a pleasant "brothy" or "meaty" taste with a long lasting, mouthwatering and coating sensation over the tongue.” 

A savory deliciousness.

Mmmm…  I’m going to use that phrase sometime today in everyday conversation.

What to experience umami for yourself?

Prize:

A lucky someone will be receiving a tube of Laura Santtini’s Taste #5 Umami Paste.  This can be used as a condiment, seasoning, flavor bomb, garnish, quick pasta sauce or salsas, or in sauces and gravies.
